The story of the Helsinki WDC Pavilion continues at Habitare

(UPM, Helsinki, 12 September 2013 at 10:00 EET) - The story of the Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 meeting place, the Pavilion, will continue at Habitare, the largest furniture, interior decoration and design fair in Finland. The wood material used to construct the Pavilion has been turned into new structures, installations, planting boxes, garden pavilions and furniture based on designs by architects and designers.

The Pavilion, built using UPM materials such as Wisa plywood  and UPM ProFi, served as a summer living room and meeting place for the citizens of Helsinki for 105 days in 2012 and attracted more than 80,000 visitors. The Pavilion combined communality, openness and aesthetics. These characteristics have also been incorporated into the new objects made from the Pavilion's frame and roof.

"During the Helsinki World Design Capital year, the Pavilion was used as a venue for many events, concerts and lectures. It was place to get together with friends and family, enjoy lunches and even practise yoga," says Elisa Nilsson, VP, Brand Management, from UPM.

All the objects on show in the Pavilion Re-made exhibition (7h11) have been made at the premises of Trash Factory in Finland from materials recovered from the Pavilion. The work was directed by designer Henrik Enbom. The main work in the exhibition is an entity called "Shadows in Birch Forest" designed by United Design Group, a group of Chinese architects. It was created by a group of students from the Polish School of Form at the premises of the Trash Factory during the summer of 2013. The Pavilion Re-made exhibition can be seen in the EcoDesign section of Habitare.

"Reusing wood material is a traditional way of making use of old buildings, so the reincarnation of the Pavilion as new structures can be seen as part of a long tradition," says designer Isa Kukkapuro-Enbom.

"Renewable materials and their recyclability are an essential part of our company's business and Biofore strategy. Our materials are versatile and multi-purpose and they will be visible at the stands of several Habitare exhibitors this year, as in previous years," Elisa Nilsson says.

UPM Grada to be showcased at several stands

UPM's own stand (7p59) will exhibit the company's thermoformable wood material UPM Grada. The floor of the stand is made from UPM ProFi composite material. The stand will be located right next to the Ahead! design area.  Furniture and other objects made from UPM Grada will also be on show at several other Habitare stands:

On the second day of the exhibition for professionals (19 September), UPM will organise a UPM Grada workshop as part of the Helsinki children's hospital project. Participants will have the opportunity to illustrate and form clothes-hangers for children  designed by Tapio Anttila.

Habitare will be held at the Helsinki Exhibition & Convention Centre (Messuaukio 1, Helsinki, Finland) on 18–22 September.

Habitare, the largest furniture, interior decoration and design fair in Finland, will take place from 18 to 22 September 2013.
