UPM has been ranked on the 22nd place in the list of 100 most sustainable corporations by the Canadian-based media and research company Corporate Knights.
"The Global 100 Index uses determined quantitative sustainability indicators in its evaluation. The approach fits well in UPM’s approach which highlights the importance of ambitious long-term targets and transparency of performance and data,” says Sami Lundgren, Vice President, Responsibility at UPM.
UPM is among the 28 Global 100 companies that have signed the UN Business Ambition for 1.5°C. The company is committed to reducing its CO2 emissions, practicing climate-positive forestry and innovating sustainable alternatives to fossil-based products. Global 100 companies earn higher share of their revenues from products or services aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, compared to their peers. As one of the UN Global Compact LEAD companies, UPM has recently put major efforts on integrating the SDGs into its product development processes. Our innovations create value and business opportunities that go beyond fossils.
“This year’s analysis and results strongly suggest that the world’s leading companies learned a lesson from the aftermath of the 2008/09 financial crisis,” says Toby Heaps, CEO of Corporate Knights. “Rather than de-prioritising sustainability when confronted with a major shock, they’ve recognised that it will drive the success of recovery strategies.”
Corporate Knights analysed some 8,080 companies with revenues more than USD 1 billion. The Global 100 Index uses sustainability indicators, such as clean revenues and the percentage of investments with beneficial environmental or social impacts. This year’s ranking included also several new performance indicators that reflect social concerns. In regional terms Europe dominated, occupying 41 positions in this year’s ranking. The Nordic countries in particular continued to punch notably above their weight.
