My summer at UPM: Learning, innovating and feeling good about my work

Ruixin Xu

Summer intern

This summer at UPM was a deeply rewarding experience, filled with growth, challenges, and the excitement of contributing to meaningful projects. In my role, I explored data visualisation and AI-driven projects, each of which provided unique learning opportunities and pushed me beyond my technical comfort zone.

One of the highlights of my summer was using Power BI to create dynamic visualisations that clarified project status. Working with Power BI helped me understand the power of data storytelling in a corporate environment. Seeing data presented in a structured, easy-to-understand format underlined the impact that clear, concise presentation can have on decision-making.

I also had the opportunity to explore AI solutions tailored to UPM's specific challenges. I proposed and delivered PowerPoint presentations on AI applications, demonstrating how these solutions could be both practical and impactful for the company. One of the projects I was responsible for was the development of a multilingual translation AI chatbot using Microsoft Azure services. This project was particularly fulfilling as it bridged language gaps between international teams, making communication smoother and more efficient.

To enhance the chatbot's capabilities, I overcame limitations in extracting information from visual data stored in Azure Index by developing an embedding model through Azure AI Services. Developing this chatbot highlighted the power of AI not only as a technological tool, but also as a means to foster stronger human connections in a diverse workplace.

For me, ‘Feel good about my work’ means knowing that my projects contribute to real improvements in my skills and have a meaningful impact on people and processes at UPM. I feel motivated when I see how my contributions bring tangible, positive changes to the team. It's about realising that even the smallest innovations can lead to significant improvements - and that motivates me to keep pushing those boundaries.

Looking back, I'm grateful for the skills and insights I gained, the supportive team environment and the opportunity to apply my knowledge in a way that made a real difference. This experience has not only strengthened my technical expertise, but also deepened my understanding of what it means to work with purpose and passion in a dynamic environment like UPM.
