UPM Graduate Life: Innovating with AI & Data in a Global Corporation

Marcello Vendruscolo

UPM Graduate

Upon completing my degree in Image Analysis & Machine Learning, I became aware and interested in the UPM Graduate Programme. The purpose of together creating a future beyond fossils resonated with my passion for nature and sustainability. In addition, the global environment in which UPM operates and the opportunities for overseas assignments appealed to my multicultural background and desire for diverse experiences.

From the beginning, my mentors supported me in making the most of the Programme. We planned and adjusted my journey to suit my evolving interests in businesses, technologies, and career aspirations. Their primary hope was for us to reflect on this one-year journey with happiness at its conclusion. I am pleased to confirm that we have indeed realized this aim.

Tailored Rotations across different Businesses, Geographies, and Domains

In my initial two rotations within the IT function, I engaged with state-of-the-art AI technologies and developed applications aimed at optimising internal processes.

A standout experience was my third rotation, where I managed a Computer Vision project in collaboration with the Specialty Papers business at the Changshu Mill in China. In addition to coding the algorithms, the team and I worked closely with local key stakeholders to define their needs. We frequently visited the mill facilities to understand the requirements for installing our camera systems. This hands-on experience, which combined elements of AI with Information and Operation Technologies, was precious. One significant aspect of the rotation was the social and cultural activities that fostered a bond with my UPM colleagues in China. I am grateful for all the support and experiences they provided, from helping me settle in during the first days to travelling together on weekends and public holidays and sharing their knowledge of local cuisine and tea.

My fourth and final rotation happened in collaboration with Raflatac, where I was exposed to a commercial domain that was entirely new to me. I analysed data related to customer interactions with Raflatac’s digital platforms and had the opportunity to engage directly with customers and external partners. These efforts support Raflatac’s commitment to customer-centricity and the growing emphasis on data-driven decision making to enhance digital customer experiences. However, this rotation was not a solo endeavour. Throughout the process, the guidance and support I received were essential in building confidence and visibility in this new environment. Overall, this rotation was filled with opportunities, trust, excitement, and learnings, for which I am truly thankful.

Despite being assigned to a specific business area in each rotation, the Programme allowed me to visit several mills across different businesses. I learned more about their operations and discussed how AI projects could enhance their production processes. These interactions with various businesses were a fantastic aspect of participating in the Graduate Programme from a global function.

Growing with UPM's Values

What I have greatly appreciated at UPM are the colleagues and responsibilities entrusted to me from the start. Despite cultural and technical background differences, I have been warmly welcomed, respected, and valued in all business areas and teams, with the autonomy and support to lead innovative projects that can impact multiple mills and transform business models—truly reflecting UPM's values of “Trust and Be Trusted” and “Achieve Together”. Another element that I appreciate at UPM is the continuous learning culture, which has encouraged me to learn and develop new skills that are relevant for my professional future.

In conclusion, I am extremely pleased with my journey throughout the UPM Graduate Programme and excited about the future as I transition into new responsibilities within the company.
