Significantly lower emissions cost-efficiently
In September 2023, Speed Ltd., specialized in transporting shipping containers, granted UPM Timber's Kaukas Sawmill a certificate based on the EcoTruck (Ekorekka) emission savings calculator, providing evidence of a significant environmental achievement in reducing carbon dioxide emissions from road transportation. As a result of this collaboration, 524 tons, or 40%, less of carbon dioxide emissions have been generated from containers transported for UPM compared to the traditional method of transporting one container at a time. Lauri Kunnas, Timber's Supply Chain Director, emphasizes the importance of this partnership.
"We have made sound decisions by adopting the use of longer and larger specialized trucks. This change not only reduces our environmental impact but also makes our operations more sustainable", Lauri says.
The use of longer specialized trucks to transport large quantities of sawn timber reduces the need for multiple smaller shipments, thereby lowering emissions and the carbon footprint. The containerization of sawn timber is carried out directly at Kaukas Sawmill, eliminating one processing stage at the ports.
According to Lauri, significant reductions in CO2 emissions have been achieved while maintaining financial benefits.
"Cost efficiency and sustainable business can go hand in hand. Acts of sustainability are not rocket science, they can indeed support business", Lauri states.
