Me & MyCity – a hands-on learning concept

The Me & MyCity learning environment is a miniature town, where primary school students get to spend a day as employees, citizens and consumers.

UPM has been involved in the project since its launch in 2009, aiming to foster young people's economic and entrepreneurial skills. In addition to companies, Me & MyCity is also supported by universities, polytechnics and municipalities.

Me & MyCity is a Finnish education innovation that received the international World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) award in 2014. The Me & MyCity concept has been presented to the prime ministers of Great Britain and the Nordic and Baltic Countries, and the European Commission has awarded it for promoting entrepreneurship.

"UPM was Me & MyCity's first corporate partner. It gave us confidence in the concept and its success in Finland, and it has encouraged other companies to get involved as well. It is important that children get to see how society and companies work in the real world. Based on the feedback we get from students and teachers, Me & MyCity is teaching six-graders necessary skills for the future. There is clearly a need for a concept like this," says the president of Me & MyCity, Tomi Alakoski.

In 2014-2015, approximately 40,000 students a.k.a. 70% of the age group will visit one of the eight Me & MyCities around Finland.
