Forest conservation

The goal of conservation is to identify the most ecologically important areas, and to leave them out of commercial use. We protect key biotopes, such as springs, cliffs, groves and brooks, because they all have unique habitats. We also protect threathened species within forests and designate larger areas for conservation. Areas are designated for conservation based on law, or voluntarily, due to their conservation value. If a conserved area is managed, we ensure that forest management is carried out in a way that protects biodiversity.

In forest conservation, we monitor our progress through two key indicators:

Protected area and valuable habitats in UPM’s Finnish forests

In 2022
16,4%
of UPM’s land area in Finland was protected or in restricted use

Baseline 2019: 15,5%

*The protection percentage includes strictly protected forestry land (12,7%) and protected areas, which can be managed and used in accordance with the instructions of authorities (3,8%).

Our forests in Finland have
43 538
protected valuable habitats.
