We renew the everyday – sustainably

With higher living standards and an ageing population, a growing number of urban, middle-class people are consuming more over a longer period. Yet, our reliance on fossil fuels and materials continues in a global scale.

Our strategy is based on the versatile use of renewable feedstocks, driven by a commitment to innovation and sustainability. It is a response to some of the biggest challenges facing the world today, such as resource scarcity, climate change, biodiversity loss and increasing inequality.

Our strategy also guides us in achieving our 2030 sustainability targets and contributing positively to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
We focus on those where we can have the biggest impact.

Our 2030 sustainability targets

We believe in science and third-party verification

We comply with international standards and are committed to respected global initiatives. We raise the bar through science-based action and verify the results with third-party when possible. Our ambitious long-term targets and tangible actions to promote sustainability have brought us recognitions in international sustainability indices.

Opportunities in many fronts

As a global material solutions company, there are numerous opportunities for us to make a positive impact and create value for society – through responsible operations and renewable and sustainable solutions.

We take action in the following key focus areas:

Actions towards net-zero CO₂ emissions

We have set ambitious emission reduction targets for 2030 throughout our value chain, and UPM's net-zero approach will be aligned with recognised international carbon accounting and assurance standards when these are finalised. Our climate agenda builds on three pillars: forests, emission reductions and products.

Enhancing biodiversity

We have had our own forest biodiversity program since 1998, and biodiversity is one of the focus areas in our Forest Action Program. Several targets and key performance indicators have been created to measure our development. We are looking for science-based approach when developing our targets and are testing eDNA for measuring biodiversity.
